What is robots.txt?

The robots.txt file is a small plain-text file placed in the root directory of your website (for example: https://example.com/robots.txt). It tells search engine crawlers which pages they are allowed or not allowed to crawl. This helps you manage your site’s crawl budget and prevent indexing of duplicate or unnecessary pages.

  • Purpose: Controls crawler access to your site content.
  • Structure: Uses simple rules like User-agent, Allow, Disallow, and optional Sitemap.
  • Important: It’s only a guideline for bots, not a security measure. Blocked URLs can still appear in search results if linked elsewhere.

Example robots.txt file

User-agent: *
Allow: /

# Block duplicate and search result pages
Disallow: /search?q=
Disallow: /*?updated-max=
Disallow: /*?max-results=

# Sitemaps for indexing
Sitemap: https://www.example.com/sitemap.xml
Sitemap: https://www.example.com/sitemap-pages.xml

How to Generate robots.txt

  1. Enter your blog or website URL (e.g., www.example.com) in the generator tool.
  2. The tool will automatically convert it into https:// and add sitemap links.
  3. Click Generate robots.txt and review the output.
  4. Customize rules if you want to block or allow specific folders or pages.
  5. Copy the final robots.txt and use it in your site or Blogger settings.

SEO Tip: If you want to block indexing of specific pages, use a <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> tag inside that page. This is more reliable than robots.txt for individual URLs.

How to Add robots.txt in Blogger

  1. Go to Blogger > Settings.
  2. Scroll to Crawlers and indexing.
  3. Enable Custom robots.txt.
  4. Paste the generated robots.txt rules into the box.
  5. Save and check by visiting https://your-domain/robots.txt.
